If you can jail break/unlock an iPhone, then is it possible to jail break/unlock an Android?

Can you jail break/unlock an Android to use for other phone companies such as tmobile, AT&T, sprint,etc.? If so how can you? It's a Motorola Android model number A855. If it can be unlocked can you use this smart phone for any phone companies? Your answers mean a lot, thank you.(:
